Artists We Support

Beverly Myers

myersBeverly Myers, our featured artist for the Fall Season, is a graduate of Boston University with a double majors degree in Art and Psychology. She studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and later, with renowned artist, Wolfe Kahn, whose teaching and influence is evident in her work. Her other teachers include Charles Reid and Don Andrews.

Her creativity is inspired by nature and color. She has a fearless approach to painting and possesses a natural talent and an innate sense for color and its effect. “I move along, sometimes changing directions many times—almost letting my body and arms express the story of the painting,” says Ms. Myers. “A good painting has the same elements as a good musical score. Rhythm—slow, fast—soft edges—hard staccato edges.”

Ms. Myers won First Prize at the Armory Art Institute in 2003. Her one person shows in 2000 and 2005 resulted in historic sales and acclaim. She is a Senior Docent at the Norton Art Museum, a life member of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and donates several of her paintings each year to her favorite charities. Ms. Myers divides her time between Palm Beach, Florida and Newton, Massachusetts. Some of her works may be viewed at her website www.bevmyers.com.

Her art show, Eastern Light, opens at Earth & Sage on Friday, September 25th 2009 with a reception from 6-7.30pm.

Aparna Sindhoor

aparnaAparna Sindhoor is the Artistic Director of Aparna Sindhoor Dance Theater. Sindhoor has trained in Bharatanatyam (one of the Indian classical dance forms) for over 20 years including 15 years with Dr. K. Venkatalakshamma, one of the foremost proponents of the Mysore style of Bharatanatyam where Abhinaya (facial expression) and graceful Jathis (pure dance compositions) are emphasized. Sindhoor has been giving accomplished professional performances since her arangetram (graduation solo recital) in 1989. Sindhoor holds a Vidwat (Masters) in dance, a Masters in English, and a Bachelors degree in Dance, literature and Dramatics. She received the gold medal in 1990 for finishing first in dance at the University of Mysore. She was recently awarded her PhD from Boston University for her research on Styles in Bharatanatyam.

Since 1996 Sindhoor has been working on the dance theater form with Raju M. Sivasankaran. Sindhoor and Raju have created works based on short stories by contemporary writers such as The Incident and After, The Hunt, Clothes, Draupadi and River Rites to give a new dimension to the content and beauty of the dance performance.

Using Indian classical dance, yoga, songs, stories and folk dances they explore the depth and beauty of the performing arts. This has made their work more interesting and accessible to diverse audiences. Sindhoor melds a unique blend of depth in the content and extraordinary artistry in her performances.

An accomplished choreographer and performer, Sindhoor is known for her creativity and power to push boundaries. She has conceived and choreographed 21 full-length dance works. She was awarded grants from the Government of India’s Human Resource Development Agency, for her dance works, Vachanadara and A Concise Portrait of Indian Woman. In these works she has expanded the boundaries of the traditional Bharatanatyam recital in terms of subject, style and production. In A Concise Portrait of Indian Woman, she used regional folk dance as part of the choreography, along with classical dance. She was sponsored by Urban Bush Women to attend the A New Dancer for a New Society workshop at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida in the summer of 1997. Her collaborations with artists and companies include Robert Uno of New World Theater, Rangayana and Teesri Duniya. She is the recipient of grants from Arts International, Somerville Arts Council and Massachusetts Arts Council. Sindhoor is the founding director of Navarasa Natyalaya, a performance art school in Mysore.

Aparna Sindhoor is also an experienced actor. Nagamandala, in which she acted as the protagonist Rani, won the best play of the year award at the Karnataka Nataka (theater) Academy. She is one of the three women featured in a documentary film about artists, Take It From Me (2001 Nefertiti Productions) and co-produced State Of The Art, a short film.
